Hundreds join Gaol Ferry Bridge reopening party

By Martin Booth  Saturday Sep 9, 2023

There was a party atmosphere as Gaol Ferry Bridge reopened on Friday afternoon after more than a year of being closed for much-needed repairs.

Hundreds of people walked back and forth across the newly renovated span over the New Cut accompanied by the sounds of samba band Batala, who kept the music going as the festivities continued in Wapping Wharf.

The bridge may be back open but work is still ongoing, with some temporary decking in places after the permanent decking stored on site was stolen. More decking has been ordered and will be installed “at a later date”.

Many of the Wapping Wharf traders who had lost a significant proportion of their business since the bridge closed in August 2022 joined Bristol mayor Marvin Rees for a photo opportunity on the bridge ahead of the public being allowed back on.

And then the barriers were removed and people flooded onto the bridge, with the celebrations on the Southville side seeing St Paul’s Church vicar, Jacqui Kean, cutting the ceremonial ribbon.

In Wapping Wharf, the party went on well into the night with people enjoying treats such as a glass of cava with every coffee at Little Victories, free beer with pizza at Bertha’s and complimentary pints at Junction.
