Karin Smyth retains Bristol South

Karin Smyth was reelected as MP for Bristol South on Friday morning.

The results for Bristol South was the first to be announced at the counting centre in Brislington which met with raucous reception of the party faithful who had been waiting in anticipation.

At the count that took place at Oasis Academy in Brislington, the former NHS manager won 18,521 votes and 42.7 per cent of the vote in Bristol South, which she has held since 2015.

Bristol South is considered a safe Labour seat as it has elected Labour MPs since 1935 at every general election. The current result marked a drop of nearly 9 per cent of vote share for Smyth since the general election in 2019.

The Conservatives were plummeted to fourth place behind Reform UK as the Green Party candidate Jai Breitnauer finished second with 10,855 votes with a vote share of 25 per cent.

During her acceptance speech Smyth expressed her delight at being able to part of the Labour government where she singled out apprenticeships for young people and NHS as key priorities for the new government and vowed to “restore hope” after 14 years of being in  “exile”.

Karin Smyth, Labour: 18,521 (42.7%)
Jai Breitnauer , Green: 10,855 (25%)
Richard Visick, Reform UK: 6,195  (14.3%)
Liz Brennan, Conservative: 4,947 (11.4%)
Andrew Brown, Lib Dem: 2721 (6.3%)
Neil Norton, Social Democratic Party: 164 (0.4%)
