‘Landmark’ building to remain as office space
Plans have been unveiled for a “high-quality regeneration” of the “landmark” building that helped to kickstart the regeneration of Bristol’s harbourside when it was constructed between 1988 and 1991.
Canons House, which has been occupied by Lloyds for the last three decades, is set to remain as “much-needed office space” after its “exemplary low carbon retrofit”.
When Canons House was given listed status in 2022, there was speculation that it might mean the office building overlooking the Floating Harbour would be turned into hundreds of flats, but that now appears unlikely.
is needed now More than ever
Owners Longstock Capital and Mactaggart Family & Partners promise that their proposals “will also activate ground floor (sic) with retail units and integrate the buildings with surrounding public spaces”, including possibly using the existing loading bay as a new cafe.
The owners of the two connected buildings – which have the nicknames of the ‘banana’ and the ‘doughnut’ – say there will be “no fundamental changes beyond additions and alterations to bring them into the 21st century”.

More flexible office space will be created which will enable there to be multiple businesses on site, with additional outdoor space created including creating access to rooftop gardens and terraces.
A letter to local residents and businesses says that the plans “will build on the existing high-quality design of the existing buildings and through these small but highly important interventions, this landmark building for the city will better suit modern-day office working and be future proofed for many years to come”.
An event to introduce the proposals is taking place on Wednesday from 2pm to 7pm at the Harbourside Pavilion
above Spitfire restaurant on Hannover Quay. For more information, visit www.canonshousebristol.co.uk
