The last hurrah of Haymarket Walk

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Aug 6, 2024

Boney Maroney, Devon Savouries, Paradise Garage, Replay, Virgin Records.

And in more recent times: the Graff Cafe, Jake’s Bikes, Loot, Mayflower, Sky Kong Kong.

All former businesses on the two levels of Haymarket Walk, one of Bristol’s most unusual shopping precincts which will soon be no more due to the redevelopment of the Premier Inn site.

For some, Haymarket Walk holds special memories of punk records, winklepickers and late-night feasting in Mayflower.

“Such an interesting semi-hidden nook,” wrote one person on Bristol24/7’s Instagram when we posted a photo of the now fenced-off lower level of Haymarket Walk.

Another reader added: “Memories of hanging out in Virgin Records and Virgin Rags when it was all shiny and new down there and very cool.”

But for others, it’s a piss-strewn alleyway; no more than a useful shortcut to the bus station.

On hearing of Haymarket Walk’s demise, one reader wrote: “About time, disgusting place.”
