A leisure centre in north Bristol has received planning permission to begin works on a major refurbishment that will see it “transformed into state-of-the-art facility that is fit for the future”.

Horfield Leisure Centre plans to make its cafe bigger, build a soft play facility and modernise the venue throughout.

The centre overlooking Horfield Common will also extend its gym, build new studios and create a new reception area and foyer, with extension works currently underway.

It is thanks to “significant” investment from both Bristol City Council and Everyone Active, the company which runs the leisure centre in partnership with the council.

Cameron Bate, contract manager for Everyone Active, said: “We are so grateful to Bristol City Council for their investment in Horfield Leisure Centre.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to give the centre a new lease of life with brand-new facilities and a refreshed look and feel.

“With the refurbishment currently underway, we intend to keep our customers updated every step of the way and hope they are as excited as we are about this project.”

Christina Gray, director for communities and public health at Bristol City Council, said: “Having access to quality leisure centres supports the health and wellbeing of Bristol’s communities, and our investment at this site will deliver modern top-class facilities that will bring benefits for generations into the future.

“The refurbishments, improvements and expansions to Horfield Leisure Centre that are already underway will enhance what’s on offer to members and the local community, which we hope will encourage more people to make use of the excellent facilities, benefit from meeting up with other members of the local community and improve their health.”
