Lib Dems looking for new mayoral candidate as Page withdraws from race

By Martin Booth  Monday Nov 30, 2020

Mary Page’s mayoral campaign was built upon scrapping the role that she was running for. But she has pulled out of the race before getting the chance to sack herself.

Page has not made a statement following the announcement from the Lib Dems, with a statement released on Monday evening saying that “has had to stand down for personal reasons”.

But on Facebook, Page said that she was feeling “heartbroken”. She wrote: “Gutted, just doesn’t do the emotion justice”

Bristol24/7 understands that Page self-financed much of her mayoral campaign, and has now taken on a job with her new employer not allowing her to have an active involvement in politics.

It leaves the Lib Dems looking for a new candidate for the elections due to take place in May 2021, against incumbent, Labour’s Marvin Rees, Tory Samuel Williams and Green Sandy Hore-Ruthven.

The Lib Dem statement said that they will “continue campaigning energetically”.

“Our campaign to scrap the mayor has been gathering strong local support. We want to save Bristolians millions annually, restore council democracy, and increase involvement of local people by reinvigorating our neighbourhood councils.”

Page was most recently the PR & communications officer at the National Composites Centre in Emersons Green. She has also been a political research assistant at South Gloucestershire Council and a broadcast journalist at the BBC.

Former Lib Dem leader of Bristol City Council, baroness Barbara Janke, said: “Due to changed personal circumstances, Mary Page will no longer be the Lib Dem mayoral candidate.

“We are sorry to lose her but recognise that the postponing of the election has caused her to reconsider her candidacy.

“I know she found it a privilege and a pleasure to be our candidate. Mary made great progress in promoting our campaign to scrap the Bristol mayoral position.

“We send her our thanks for her hard work and all good wishes for her future in her new job.”
