‘Lifeline’ charity under threat of closure

By Charlie Watts  Monday Apr 4, 2022

An advice centre has warned that it could close unless it raises sufficient funds to continue.

Filwood Hope has been a hub of support for the community of Knowle West in south Bristol for the last 25 years.

But the charity has now launched an emergency appeal to raise £10,000 so it can keep going.

“If we closed, it would be a big loss to the community,” said centre manager Pearl Aitken.

“The value we offer is really quite priceless, and the people who access us are in a place of need or support.”

Based on Filwood Broadway, Filwood Hope offers a range of free services, including debt, benefit and housing advice.

Up to 75 people currently access the centre each week, and it employs three expert advisers.

But the charity is not currently receiving funding, which is why it has turned to asking the public for help.

Ed Palairet, the chair of trustees for Filwood Hope, says it has been relying on its reserves while it awaits the outcome of funding applications.

But he says there will need to be a clear indication of the support in place by April 12 – the date of the next trustees meeting – to secure the charity’s future.

“We are asking for support from across Bristol because I don’t think anyone wants to see Filwood Hope close. I think that will only increase the hardship felt across the city,” said Ed.

“It’s difficult to put into words how special this place is. There’s a lot of goodwill in our neighbourhood for Filwood Hope.

“It’s really important going forward that this lifeline is still available to people when they need it.”
