Thangam Debbonaire arrived at the Bristol Central count with her husband, Kevin Walton, signing in at the front desk before being applauded by her supporters.
“I’m really happy there’s a Labour government,” said Debbonaire, who looks almost certain to have lost her seat to the Greens.
Former professional cellist Debbonaire would have likely been given a cabinet position by Keir Starmer, who will now have to look for a new culture secretary if Debbonaire does indeed get beaten by Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer.

If you love turnout statistics, this is your moment:
- The provisional turnout for Bristol North West is 65.1%
- The provisional turnout for Bristol North East is 60.2%
- The provisional turnout for Bristol South is 57.7%
- The provisional turnout for Bristol Central is 69.4%
- Remember, we have a bonus by-election today too with the provisional total from Horfield at 61% – a higher than usual turnout no doubt helped that we have another election also happening today
2.34am
Jacob Rees-Mogg has arrived at the North East Somerset & Hanham count. If WECA mayor Dan Norris wins here, he will be able to carry on being the metro mayor while also being MP – becoming the highest-paid elected politician in the UK.
2.33am
The provisional turnout for Bristol East is 61.9% – 46,964 voters out of a total electorate of 75,917.
2.10am
Carla Denyer – the future MP for Bristol Central according to predictions – has arrived at the count in Brislington with a huge smile on her face.

In what I think is the nearest local result of the night so far, Labour has gained Stroud from the Conservatives.
1.44am
BBC reporter Katie Razzall says that the Greens “are storming it” in Bristol Central and that she has seen some tears in the Labour camp who seem to be coming to terms with the fact that Thangam Debbonaire might be on course to lose her seat.
There were, however, big smiles earlier in the day:

Excitement at Oasis Academy as we get our first tannoy announcement of the evening for the adjudication of doubtful ballot papers for the Bristol South constituency. That’s how scintillating things are here at the moment.
1.31am
Local democracy reporter Adam Postans has returned with his trademark ‘crispometer’:

Bristol24/7 photographer Rob Browne has been busy meeting candidates of all parties and persuasions at Oasis Academy.

Bristol North West candidates Caroline Gooch (Lib Dem) and Mary Page (Green) may represent different parties but they told me that they remain friends and say they represent “the nicest” constituency in Bristol.
Page switched allegiances to the Greens in 2023 having previously been the Lib Dem candidate for Bristol mayor.

There’s talk that Laura Saunders, who is currently under investigation by the Gambling Commission, will be attending the count at City Academy. Her name still appeared on the ballot papers on Thursday as the Tory candidate in Bristol North West despite support from the party being withdrawn.

So far, the biggest smile of the night that I have seen at Oasis has been on the face of one of Carla Denyer’s closest aides. A sign of things to come?
Leader of Bristol City Council, Tony Dyer, has also told me that is feeling “quietly optimistic” of things to come as he left Oasis Academy for City Academy.

I have heard from Labour sources that they are preparing for a Labour gain in Bristol Central.
If these whispers are correct, it will mean that Thangam Debbonaire – tipped to be the culture minister in a future Labour government – will be looking for a new job tomorrow.
Could Keir Starmer elevate her to the House of Lords when he is given the keys to number 10?

A pile of pizzas has been brought into the media room by Labour campaigners as we wait for the results. We have been told that the Horfield by-election will be announced first.

I’ve just spotted Green candidate for Bristol East, Ani Stafford-Townsend, among those who are waiting in the corridors of Oasis Academy. They could well come second as Kerry McCarthy holds her seat for Labour.

Ballot papers have begun to arrive at Oasis Academy in Brislington, where the counts for Bristol Central, Bristol East and Bristol South are taking place.

The polls have closed and the exit poll conducted by Ipsos is out, predicting a Labour landslide.
- Labour: 410
- Conservative: 131
- Lib Dem: 61
- Reform: 13
- Green: 2
But it’s that last number that is the most interesting for Bristol. It seems likely the Greens’ one single seat gained is in Bristol Central.
If Denyer does become MP for Bristol Central, I hope that she improves her geographical knowledge.
By my calculations, the road she is standing on is Cornwallis Crescent in Clifton.

Not long to go now until the famous 10pm exit poll when we will get the clearest indication yet of the results expected tonight.
For those of us in Bristol, one aspect to look for is the number of predicted Green MPs. If the number is more than one, then Carla Denyer could be declared the winner of Bristol Central.
But we will only know the results for sure as they come in over the course of the evening. The winners across Bristol are not likely to be announced until gone 3am tomorrow.

While I prepare to cycle from my home in Bristol Central to Bristol East for the count at Oasis Academy in Brislington, let’s just take a look at the shape of the Bristol North West constituency. Extraordinary.
Answers on a postcard please as to why the constituency is shaped this bizarre way.

As a reminder of how things stand and who to look out for tonight, these are the 61 general election candidates in the Bristol area.
Our city has five constituencies that we will be keeping the closest eye on:
- Bristol Central
- Bristol East
- Bristol North East
- Bristol North West
- Bristol South
And we will also be following the goings-on from a bit further afield:
- Filton & Bradley Stoke
- Thornbury & Yate
- North East Somerset & Hanham
- North Somerset
- Weston-super-Mare

Welcome to our live blog of the results of the general election from the five constituencies across Bristol. Polling stations close at 10pm tonight and it is then that we will know the exit poll which (usually) accurately predicts just what the national picture will look like.
We will be keeping it as local as possible here, however, with Bristol24/7 reporters Betty Woolerton and Karen Johnson at City Academy in Redfield where the counts for Bristol North West and Bristol North East are taking place, as well as a bonus by-election happening today in Horfield.
I will be heading shortly to Oasis Academy in Brislington, where joined by reporter Milan Perera and photographer Rob Browne, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the results of Bristol Central, Bristol East and Bristol South.
Can Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer cause an upset against possible future Labour culture minister Thangam Debbonaire in Bristol Central? We won’t know the answer to that until the early hours of tomorrow morning.
There are some nationally significant constituencies surrounding Bristol which we will also be reporting on tonight, including North East Somerset & Hanham where Jacob Rees-Mogg could be getting the ‘Portillo moment’ of the night if WECA mayor Dan Norris wins the seat; Filton & Bradley Stoke, where Labour’s Claire Hazelgrove hopes to cause an upset against Tory Jack Lopresti; and North Somerset, where former Tory cabinet minister Liam Fox is fighting for his political life.
Please do comment below as the evening progresses and keep in touch with us on X, where we will all also be live-tweeting as late night turns into early morning. It’s great to have you with us!
