Missing Bristol photographer and filmmaker found

By Martin Booth  Saturday Nov 2, 2024

A photographer and filmmaker from Bristol whose inflatable boat broke down following a trip from Pembrokeshire in Wales has remarkably walked ashore on the east coast of Ireland.

Chris Ellery set off from Fishguard on Thursday and expected to return the next day before his 10ft boat developed engine trouble.

The Irish police, the Garda, said the 54 year-old was “tired but okay”.

“He broke down, but managed to get it going again. But his phone had also stopped working,” a Coastguard spokesperson told BBC News.

“He came ashore in County Wicklow and made his way to a local police station. They contacted Dyfed-Powys Police. It’s good news.”

A huge search operation had been launched for missing Ellery involving an aircraft, several RNLI crews, two coastguard teams and police around north Pembrokeshire, Cardigan Bay and St Bride’s Bay.

Ellery’s family had also travelled to Fishguard after they had not heard from him.

Writing on Facebook at 4.35pm on Saturday, Kenzie, Ellery’s daughter, said: “I just want to say thank you for all the amazing support from everyone.

“The details are still vague but we will be able to answer questions in time, the important part is dad is alive, safe and well!

“It’s been great how social media can bring people together positively and see communities come together to help.

“Thank you to everyone involved.”
