Moaners in the mist

By Martin Booth  Sunday Feb 15, 2015

“What idiot decided to do a fog bridge to celebrate Bristol European Green Capital how irresponsible right by water #idiotBristolMayor?!”

This tweet by @MicheleRickard ‏isn’t alone in criticising the In Between Time festival‘s showcase event as Pero’s Bridge becomes smothered in fog at regular intervals.

It’s an installation by Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya and was the must-see attraction over the weekend. The only other time when so many people crowd onto the bridge is during the Harbour Festival when it becomes one-way.

The difference now is that many of the people on the bridge aren’t actually going anywhere. Instead, they stay in the mist, taking photographs, working out how it’s happening and all getting slightly wet.

Just make sure to be careful with particular hairstyles, as these two tweeters prove:

@mizzban: “Bristol needs to put a warning on that fog bridge installation telling people not to walk over if they have naturally curly hair.”

@janesarockin: “The fog bridge in Bristol seems a stupid idea, people don’t look happy bout it, bet women are cursing as will ruin hair, if you wear glasses”

These guys are even angrier:

@perfectlycat: “Fucking really, Bristol? ‘Art’ installation on a bridge is a fog machine that makes people wet and miserable. Well done Brizzle”

@bobhallrip: “See Bristol is put its council £ to good use.A fog machine on commuters walk to walk for next 10 days.Flown expensive Japanese artist.Shit!”

‏@sleepyninights  “what a joke! Woman gets paid 2 come from japan to make fog on bridge next 2 non smoking area while we have closed all carehomes”

But there are many other people who love it:

@FionaClabon: “Bristol, you absolute stunner. Walking through this was amazing.”

@julienbob: “Dramatic fog over the bridge. Only in Bristol.”

@AnnaGrear: “Pero’s Bridge – inspirational meditation on interaction between bodies – human and otherwise.”

And for others, it’s all a bit of fun:

@CalebParkin: “Just crossed #fogbridge again. Felt like I was the vegetables in Morrison’s.”

‏@PeteLordAardman: “Fog. Bridge. See it’s a bridge with fog on it. A foggy bridge if you will. It’s engaging and moist.”
