Protesters march against Bristol Uni’s £92m ‘defence partnerships’

By Karen Johnson  Saturday Feb 1, 2025

More than 100 people including students, toddlers and medical professionals marched through Bristol protesting against institutions that are believed to have funded the Gaza war.

The march began from Tyndall Avenue, winding its way down Park Street before concluding outside Barclays in Broadmead.

Organised by Bristol Palestine Alliance and joined in by several local groups, the march was an effort to raise awareness against the University of Bristol’s “defence partnerships” of £92,890,934 which protesters believe have further facilitated the war in Gaza.

The alliance also spearheaded a laser show on Friday evening, projecting the figure on the side of the Wills Memorial Building.

Addressing the crowd before the march, a student of Bristol university said that all major Bristol universities had responded to the war with a “coordinated silence”.

Friday also marked the beginning of Bristol Light Festival

He further added that the government has failed to respond, despite several thousand people showing up locally and nationally to rally for the rights of Palestinians.

While a three-phase ceasefire deal came into effect on January 15, speakers at the march urged that the contributions of institutions like Starbucks, the University of Bristol and Barclays is still instrumental in funding the war.

Facing vice-chancellor Evelyn Welch’s office window, the crowd led by a University of Bristol student chanted: “Evelyn Welch you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide .”
