Murdered Eddie’s family remember ‘sweet boy’ with ‘loving nature’

By Seun Matiluko  Friday Jul 19, 2024

As the first anniversary of his murder approaches, the mother of Eddie King Muthemba Kinuthia has remembered him as “a sweet sweet boy” with a “loving nature”.

Irene Muthemba, who has two other children, said it has been a “tough journey” navigating life after her son’s death in St Paul’s on July 21 2023.

Nineteen-year-old Eddie was fatally stabbed in Grosvenor Road Triangle Park, with police suspecting men later seen riding a black electric bike were involved in the killing.

A year on, however, police are still searching for Edie’s killer. Three men arrested weeks after his murder have since been released on bail.

Irene said that coping with her son’s death is “only possible because I’m surrounded with supportive family and friends”.

Eddie’s aunt, Jade Morris, immediately broke into tears when remembering his murder. She recalled how much Eddie loved cooking and that he had plans to become a chef.

“Talking about Eddie in the past tense is so difficult,” Jade said.

Both Irena and Jade think more should be done to prevent young people carrying knives.

Irene said: “Why end somebody’s life, just over some conflict? Why not just understand how precious life is?”

In an interview to mark one year since Eddie’s death, Irene spoke at length about how much she misses her son and his hugs.

She thinks “he would have been an awesome man” if given the chance to grow up.

“He was just so full of life. I think life was such an explosion for him and I miss that. I really do,” Irene said.

Ans both Eddie’s mother and aunt have not given up hope that one day his killers will be found and convicted.

Jade said: “I can’t wait for the day those people tell us why they did this because the not knowing is awful. I probably won’t but I’m hopeful one day we’ll find out why this happened.”

A review of hundreds of hours of CCTV footage by the police suggests there were around 150 people in the Grosvenor Road Triangle area at the time of Eddie’s murder – but only a third have come forward or been traced so far.

Officers from Avon & Somerset Police’s major crime investigation team are continuing to work on the investigation, led by detective chief inspector Mark Almond.

DCI Almond said: “There were so many people in and around Grosvenor Road that night. Any one of them may have that final bit of information which could bring Eddie’s killers to court.

He added: “We are not giving up on Eddie and we want to get the answers that Irene and Eddie’s family so badly need. There are people who can help. Please come forward.”
