New railway station to be built on site of old railway station
Ashley Hill station was built in 1864 and closed in 1964.
Almost 60 years later, a new station will be built here with construction work expected to start in 2023 once a funding package is agreed by the West of England Combined Authority in January.
The new Ashley Down station, located on the site of the previous Ashley Hill station, will have an entrance off the Concorde Way walking and cycling path.
is needed now More than ever
The station entrance will be located where the path meets Station Road, with the route to the station from Muller Road and Station Lane via an existing subway that passes underneath the railway line.
Once complete, the station will be served by trains operating between Temple Meads and Filton Abbey Wood.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said: “It’s fantastic that work is set to get underway on our second new railway station for Bristol, with our city’s first new station in almost a century now almost finished at Portway Park & Ride.
“This will be the first time in almost 60 years that residents in the Ashley Down area will be able to catch trains locally, helping to better connect people to employment, education and leisure opportunities, while tackling congestion and pollution, and reducing social and economic isolation.
“Our investment into improving the rail network, and working with partners to achieve this, is an important part of our long-term strategy to boost sustainable transport and increase connectivity across Bristol and the wider region as we work towards the mass transit system which Bristolians need and deserve.”

Ashley Down station is part of the wider MetroWest 2 railway enhancement programme – funded by WECA working with Bristol City Council, South Gloucestershire Council and Bath & North-East Somerset Council – which has plans to introduce seven new railway stations in the wider Bristol region over the next five years.
As well as Ashley Down, other new stations will be Portway Park & Ride (due to open in early 2023), Henbury, Pill, Portishead, Charfield and North Filton next to the proposed arena in the Brabazon hangars.
