New signpost celebrates Bristol’s twin cities

By Martin Booth  Thursday Apr 18, 2024

A new signpost features street signs from the seven cities across the world that are twinned with Bristol.

Now erected on College Green, the street signs arranged around the top of the pole point in the direction of each city, with their exact distance from Bristol engraved in a metal semi-circle at its base.

The signpost on College Green in front of City Hall was paid for by the Guild of Guardians, a charity linked to the lord mayor.

Bristol is twinned with Bordeaux in France, Hannover in Germany, Oporto in Portugal, Tbilisi in Georgia, Puerto Morazan in Nicaragua, Beira in Mozambique and Guangzhou in China.

Bristol was one of the first cities to adopt the idea of town twinning to encourage friendship across borders after the Second World War.

We have been twinned with Bordeaux and Hannover since 1947, with the latest twinning arrangement put in place with the south-eastern Chinese city of Guangzhou in 2021.
