New tower block could be built on corner of Castle Park

By Martin Booth  Monday Mar 14, 2022

Bristol could be getting a new residential tower block on one corner of Castle Park designed by a Stirling Prize-shortlisted firm of architects.

More than 25 storeys high, the tower will be above a water source heat pump currently being built on the site of a former council depot.

Almost 200 homes will be contained within the “modular mixed-use” development, with  a design by Groupwork and McGregor & Coxall winning a competition organised by Bristol Housing Festival.

If approval is granted for the scheme, the development will be built for Bristol City Council’s house-building company Goram Homes, who recently launched a competition for the Portwall Lane car park.

The homes will be the first to be built in Castle Park since the Blitz.

Groupwork’s Nerissa Yeung said: “We’re delighted and excited to have won this competition, which gives us and Goram Homes the opportunity to combine their ambition of negative embodied carbon construction with inclusive and sustainable living in Bristol’s town centre.”

Goram Homes managing director Stephen Baker added: “We launched a design competition for Castle Park to find the most innovative and sustainable scheme for this important site right in the centre of Bristol.

“It was crucial for any proposal to deliver our vision of a development that respected its position by the park and next to our energy centre – the largest water source heat pump in England.

“We received creative and bold entries from across the UK. It was particularly inspiring to see Bristol firms, in different sectors, working together to respond to the challenge of how to deliver much-needed homes in a way that respects the environment.”

Landscape and urbanism consultant McGregor Coxall, whose Bristol office is on Berkeley Square in Clifton, say that they have “designed the public and private areas with biodiversity in mind, setting aside sufficient area to provide 350kg of seasonal fruit and veg for nine months of the year. In addition to ground-level public realm, roof levels have been designed to be communal for residents while also productive.” – image: Groupwork McGregor Coxall
