Overwhelming support for Bristol Arena to be built at Temple Meads

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Mar 13, 2018

More than three-quarters of Bristol24/7 readers want Bristol Arena to be built on land next to Temple Meads.

A poll conducted via Twitter on Monday asked where the long-awaited arena should be constructed.

In clear first place, 77 per cent of respondents wanted it at Temple Meads compared to 13 per cent who want it in Filton and 10 per cent who do not want to see it built at all.

“I voted TMs but live a closer to Filton,” said Craig White. “Makes sense for the city I love to have it in the centre. I’ve wanted this for so many years and we bloody deserve one.”

Walks without Rhythm voted for Filton. He said: “Don’t forget the people that don’t live in Bristol! TMs would be a nightmare to get to, imagine a Friday night concert and fighting the rush hour (as I do for a lot smaller venues). Build outside the city, get good transport links and parking in place and everybody wins.”

On the day that the poll was published, a new Twitter account appeared called Filton MegaShed, describing itself as “inaccessible, unsustainable, unpopular but CHEAP. It’s what you deserve, Bristol”.

In more arena news, more than 4,500 people have signed a petition calling for the arena to be built at Temple Meads – meaning that a debate on the matter will be held at the next full council meeting at City Hall on March 20.

In more more arena news, city councillors have asked to get their hands on a major report on the arena before it is made public following concerns about not having sufficient time to scrutinise the information.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees says that a final decision on the arena’s location will be made based on the outcome of the report weighing up the economic, social and environmental benefits of each site. A final decision is expected to be revealed at a cabinet meeting on May 1.

The Brabazon Hangar on the former Filton airfield is the other possible location for Bristol Arena
