Partial closure of St George skate park

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Oct 22, 2021

A section of St George wheel park is now out of bounds due to the “poor and worsening condition” of the ramps.

Bristol City Council made the decision to barricade off part of the well-used site following “a number of incidents and an extensive inspection” and is asking people not to enter the area surrounded by tall metal fencing.

The council says it is looking at ways to repair the three large ramps on the Lyndale Road side of the park, as well as options to upgrade the whole area dedicated to skating and riding.

Views from members of the community and those who use the park are welcomed.

Mayor Marvin Rees told Bristol24/7 in June the council is seeking to bring forward more “world-class” facilities for skaters in areas such as St George.

Speaking on Friday, a Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “Three large ramps on the Lyndale Road side of the park have been closed following an extensive inspection of the condition of the skate park.

“This has been done to protect public safety following several incidents and reports of this area of the park being in a poor condition. We are currently looking at ways to repair sections of the skate park as well as carrying out an upgrade of the whole skating area. We are working closely with the local community and skating groups about this and welcome their views.”

Bristol24/7 has asked how long it will take to repair and upgrade the site but has been told it is not possible to put a timeframe on it at this stage.
