Passengers gather at Portway Park & Ride to greet first train
Railway enthusiasts gathered in one corner of Shirehampton on Tuesday morning to welcome in the first train at Portway Park & Ride on its first public day of opening.
Others had got on at stations along the line in order to get off at Portway Park & Ride; as we all know by now, the first new station to open in Bristol for almost 100 years.
The 5.34am to Severn Beach was delayed by a few minutes, and arrived and departed the station with some splendid tones much to the delight of the gathered crowd.

Staff from GWR were handing out commemorative pin badges and tote bags to mark the historic occasion.
Portway Park & Ride has now become the first new station to open in Bristol since Parson Street in 1927.
Among the first people to step off the first train to stop at Portway Park & Ride was Geoff Marshall, whose YouTube channel taking him to stations up and down the UK has more than 300,000 subscribers, and who had joined the train at Clifton Down on Tuesday morning.
“This new station is obviously great to see as I’m a fan of railways,” Marshall told Bristol24/7.
“New stations are good and they lead to other new stations and expansion, which just gets more people on the railways and off the roads.
“I like the fact that here you can hear the rumble of the M5 in the background. Every car you can get out of Bristol city centre and a bum on a seat on a train is a good thing.”
