Photographer captures rare weather phenomenon

By Connie Brownhill  Wednesday Jan 12, 2022

The misty mornings have given rise to a beautiful rare ‘white rainbow’ that was spotted by the coast in Portishead.

Leighton James captured the moment the fogbow appeared in the blue sky, perfectly framing Black Nore Lighthouse.

The photographer, who specialises in architecture and interiors, told Bristol24/7 he was out taking photos of a property on the Portishead coastline when he saw the rare phenomenon.

A fogbow is similar in some respects to a traditional rainbow, according to the Met Office. It forms from sunlight interacting with water droplets contained in fog, mist or cloud rather than interacting with raindrops as it does in a classical rainbow.

“When I spotted this so had to grab a picture,” Leighton told Bristol24/7.

“It appeared to start in the River Severn and stretched all the way across to Portishead.”
