Plans submitted for a new ‘sustainable community’ in Bristol

By Karen Johnson  Wednesday Aug 14, 2024

Plans have been submitted by a national housebuilding company to transform a 40-acre site in Bristol into 555 new homes.

The site next to Brislington Park and Ride, south of the A4 Bath Road, has been mentioned in an outline planning application by Bellway Strategic Land who propose to turn it into a “sustainable and eco-friendly neighbourhood”.

The site had previously been highlighted as suitable for housing in Bristol City Council’s draft Local Plan.

Newly released images of Bellway Strategic Land’s proposal reveal an array of apartments and houses, a local centre with shops, play areas, public open spaces and ecological habitats.

Bellway Strategic Land’s director for the central region, Fergus Thomas, said: “This is a major project for the area and we have liaised with the city council and the local community to seek people’s views on how we should approach the scheme”.

Thomas continued: “More than 40 per cent of the site area would be green open space, providing new habitats and wetlands for wildlife.

“There would be recreational routes and play areas for new and existing residents, including the wider community at Hungerford.”

Consultation with the local community led to amendments in the final plan, including homes being designed with lower heights.

35 per cent of properties on the site would be allocated as affordable housing, which will include one and two bedroom apartments and three and four bedroom houses.

According to Thomas, the outline application submitted is a viable solution to the current housing crisis in our city.

He said: “Bristol’s housing crisis needs to be addressed, with the waiting list for affordable homes continuing to grow.

“Bristol City Council has identified this land as being suitable for housing in its draft Local Plan and we feel this is an ideal scheme to play a part in helping address the huge demand for private and affordable homes in the city.”

Bellway Strategic Land’s outline planning application will determine whether the development can progress and, if so, how many homes could be accommodated on the site.
