Plaque calling out adulterer revealed to be a copy

By Martin Booth  Monday Mar 25, 2024

An artist who specialises in witty plaques and signs has blamed an “utter, utter twat” for stealing one of his ideas and putting it on a bench in Bristol.

The news of the ‘new’ plaque calling out an adulterer called Roger even made the national news, with the Observer’s story going so far as to speculate whether it was a work by Banksy.

But Bristol24/7 can reveal that the plaque on a bench on Royal York Crescent in Clifton Village is in fact a close imitation of a work from 2020 by the Misfortune Teller, with just the name and date of birth changed from the original piece.

Writing on Instagram, the Misfortune Teller said: “It’s not Banksy’s; it’s fucking mine! So apparently some utter, utter twat in Bristol has stolen one of my plaques ideas and put it on a bench.

“If anyone knows someone at the Guardian (and the Daily Mail, who’ve also featured it), can you please set the record straight. The audacity.”
