Police & crime commissioner candidates confirmed
Mark Shelford. Ever heard of him? He is the current Avon & Somerset police & crime commissioner (PCC) and he is up for re-election in a few weeks.
As well as voting for councillors across Bristol in the local elections on May 2, we will also have the opportunity to elect a new police & crime commissioner across the Avon & Somerset constabulary region.
Unlike councillors, being PCC is a full-time job with a salary of £88,600. Their main role is to hold the police force to account but they also have the power to hire and fire the chief constable.

So who are the candidates in the Avon & Somerset police & crime commissioner election 2024?

- Greens: Katy Grant
- Labour: Clare Moody
- Conservative: Mark Shelford
Benet Allen

Currently a councillor and formerly deputy leader Somerset West & Taunton Council, Allen works for a coach company, is sometimes found driving the Minehead town bus service and is also a helicopter filming pilot.
Katy Grant

Councillor for the Clifton ward in Bristol and a family court magistrate, Grant has worked on the issue of child protection and preventing violence against women for 20 years, largely overseas and with the United Nations.

Represented the South West as an MEP, worked in Downing Street under Gordon Brown, was a trade union official for more than 20 years and is currently co-CEO of equality and human rights charity, Equally Ours.

The incumbent PCC spent 32 years as an Army officer, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. He was previously the deputy leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council.
