Police in white protective suits descend on square

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 4, 2024

A huge emergency operation was launched on Monday evening which saw dozens of emergency workers descend on a square in Kingsdown.

Roads around King Square were filled with police cars, fire engines and ambulances as police officers and ambulance staff spoke to a man in a grey tracksuit in the middle of the square.

Soon after 8.15pm, four police officers in white protective suits approached the man and after wrestling him to the ground, he was led away to be hosed down by fire crews before being taken away in an ambulance.

Police later confirmed that the man had been detained under the Mental Health Act.

From the level of the response, it appeared that the emergency services were taking no chances, with some officers wearing goggles while talking to the man for almost two hours as he spent much of the time sat on a bench, sometimes smoking a cigarette.

An Avon & Somerset police spokesperson said: “A man has now been detained under the Mental Health Act and is now in the care of the mental health services.”
