More poo buses after number 2 leaves its mark
More buses run on gas from human excrement could be introduced in Bristol following the successful trial of the so-called “poo bus”.
Over 100 new bio buses – including double deckers – could be rolled out by Wessex and First Bus after the trials on the number 2 route this year.
First has put together a £2.5 million jjoint bid with local councils to the Office for Low Emission Vehicles to install a bio methane tank in their Lawrence Hill to power 110 new green double deckers.
Wessex are also planning to build a refuelling station in Avonmouth, in partnership with Wessex Water subsidiary Geneco, which could power a further 20 buses.
If planning permission is approved, poo buses could be introduced by First next year.
Jenny MacLeod, First general manager in Bristol, said: “This joint bid represents a really exciting future for bus travel in Bristol. If we are successful First West of England, alongside our local authority partners, will be leading the way in creating a fully sustainable public transport network that can really make a difference to people in and around Bristol.”
She added: “All 110 double decker Bio-Buses will operate in Bristol, representing almost half the fleet. Our extensive network in Bristol means that we can really make a difference to those areas that really need it. It will revolutionise the entire public transport network in Bristol.”
