Portway closed due to flooding
Traffic backed up as far as Sea Mills on the Portway after the road was closed in both directions on Wednesday due to flooding.
A BMW driver got his car stuck in floodwaters on Cumberland Basin Road before police blocked access close to its right turn onto Faraday Road, while water also broke the River Avon’s banks into the anti-avalanche tunnel underneath the Suspension Bridge.
The high tide was one of the largest seen in Bristol for many years.
is needed now More than ever
In a statement posted to X (Twitter) at 9.54am, Avon & Somerset Police said: “The Portway #Bristol is currently closed in both directions near the Clifton Suspension Bridge due to flooding which is also affecting Hotwell Road and Bridge Valley Road.
“Emergency services are on scene and motorists are urged to find alternative routes.”
