Proposals for up to 250 student flats on Church Road unveiled
A proposal that could see the former Co-operative Funeralcare site on Church Road turned into student accommodation has been revealed.
The new vision for the brownfield land would see up to 250 flats built in buildings up to six-storeys high, along with car and cycle parking spaces and landscaping.
People are invited to give their feedback on the proposals before a formal planning application is submitted to Bristol City Council, with a public consultation running from September 27 to October 11.
is needed now More than ever
The plans, detailed in a dedicated website by unnamed developers, is to build a student complex on the site consisting of studio and cluster apartments with shared living areas that would include “seats and a full kitchen”, as well as communal games and social areas.
The accommodation would be allocated to undergraduate, postgraduate or international students.

Developers behind the proposals say: “The proposed scheme complements the area and will significantly improve the appearance of the site which is not currently contributing to the conservation area.
“The proposal will introduce new residents to the area, which in turn will support existing and new businesses which will further the economic regeneration of the neighbourhood.”
The plans are the latest to be unveiled on Church Road, which is already undergoing numerous changes with several prominent developments in the pipeline, including at the derelict site just opposite the former Co-operative Funeralcare building.
This is the first major scheme to propose student accommodation in what is largely a residential and local high street area.
The proposals will include electric car charging points, with developers saying their scheme will provide onsite amenities, shared meeting spaces and communal facilities.

The existing trees that line Church Road are to be protected and retained and the scheme will include “a student management plan that will seek to minimise disruption to residents and to manage start of term and end of term drop off/pick up”.
