Putting cyclists’ safety first on the Triangle
Could Bristol one day be as safe to travel around on two wheels as European cities such as Copenhagen?
A small win for improving cyclists’ safety has been implemented on the Clifton Triangle, with early release signals allowing cyclists to leave the advanced stop box ahead of other vehicles.
The new lights are in place on Triangle West, in both the left lanes next to Cosmo heading towards Whiteladies Road and in the right lane turning onto Queen’s Road.

Reaction to the new lights has mostly been positive.
Emma How said: “I really like this. From a motorist perspective it can be a moment of anxiety as wanting not to get in the way of the cyclist so this removes that uncertainty.”
Michael Lloyd-Jones tweeted: “Wow. This is progress. Now only the entire city to repurpose with #space4cycling and we’re sorted.”
But a potential problem has also been spotted by Lizzy Stephens, who tweeted that on Sunday she saw a pedestrian mistake the green bike light as a signal to walk. “They then walked out just as all the cars were about to start driving.”
