Rave hosted by Lakota on Turbo Island

By Rachel Sutherland  Wednesday Mar 22, 2023

Drum and bass revellers gathered on Turbo Island for a free outdoor rave hosted by Lakota.

DJ Turno played a high tempo set in the open to a crowd of people as the bonfire burned on the tarmac of what had been renamed ‘Turno Island’.

Lakota nightclub posted a video of the pop up event on its Instagram account, with DJ Turno hinting towards another Turbo Island takeover soon, commenting: ‘Round 2’ with side-eye emojis.

Another Instagram user also commented on the video and said: ‘I saw ‘Turno Island’ on the billboard – had no idea it was gonna be real’.

Turno played his set on Turbo Island ahead of his slot at Lakota later that night on Friday.

Dani from Lakota said historically it has been known for “pushing the boundaries with outdoor events that bring the community together.”

They said: “As the beating heart of Bristol’s underground music scene for over 30 years, we strongly believe in keeping Bristol’s culture alive and we take pride in doing so.

“Historically, we’ve been notorious for pushing the boundaries with outdoor events that bring the community together.

“With the current climate in the events industry, we think it’s more important now than ever to take a step back from the world of social media and get people connecting in real life.

“This is where the ‘Turno Island’ concept stemmed from, it was the perfect opportunity.

“We had the inimitable DJ Turno booked in at the club that night so it just came together and made sense”

“If you’re from Bristol then you almost definitely know about the iconic little spot on Stokes Croft that is Turbo Island.

“Despite its controversy, it’s certainly a vibrant hub of creative activity and we wanted to play a part in keeping it alive in a way that respected our neighbours and the community.

“It was humbling to see such a varied group of people from different generations come down or stop past after work. Overall it was a really exciting project to see unfold.”
