Redcliffe Bascule Bridge lifts during testing of new systems

By Martin Booth  Monday Jan 20, 2025

Testing of the Redcliffe Bascule Bridge’s refurbished systems has seen the bridge lifted into its raised position.

It’s a rare occurrence nowadays but was something of vital importance when the Floating Harbour was a working dock.

The bridge was built in 1942 to link Queen Square to the city centre and needed to lift to allows larger boats to enter Welsh Back.

It has previously lifted in recent years, including in 2021 to allow the barge on which half of Three Brothers Burgers occupies to be taken for repairs.

The £3 million refurbishment of Redcliffe Bascule Bridge focused on addressing structural problems and upgrading the mechanical and electrical elements of the structure.

In order for training to be carried out on the bridge’s revised lifting system, from Monday to January 31 the bridge will be closed to all road users from 9.30am and 3.30pm each day.
