Residents and traders carry coffin through Clifton Village

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 8, 2021

A councillor was called a “liar” by residents angry at plans to pedestrianise parts of Clifton Village

Some people claim that the plans to open up Princess Victoria Street to pedestrians are being pushed through without proper consultation.

On Tuesday morning, a few dozen protesters gathered around a fake coffin branded ‘the death of democracy’ to walk around streets that had been closed to allow the march to take place.

Former Lib Dem leader of Bristol City Council, Barbara Janke, now baroness Janke, was one of the speakers in front of the coffin, with her speech interrupted by a car driver unhappy that the road had been closed.

“This whole thing is not about being against change,” Janke said on the corner of Princess Victoria Street and Waterloo Street.

“What it is about is being confident about what is being proposed, and having a protest that is transparent and accessible to us so that we can make our views known.”

In front of an agitated crowd, Clifton councillor Paula O’Rourke defended the consultation plans, saying that more than 900 people have already responded and that she was due to meet on Tuesday evening with traders to look more closely at the city council’s plans.

“I passionately believe in supporting the local traders in Clifton Village,” O’Rourke said.

She added: “This is not about the death of democracy. You asked for a consultation. We provided one.”
