Return of the RISE Awards for 2022

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Sep 2, 2022

Recognising the lack of visibility of Black-owned businesses on the high street, two women set about raising their platform in Bristol.

Nine years down the line, RISE founders Sandra Gordon and Lynn Mareno have announced the return of an awards ceremony that celebrates individual successes and inspirational role models from African and Caribbean communities in the city.

The glittering ceremony due to take place underneath the Concorde at Aerospace Bristol on Saturday, September 10 showcases the efforts and achievements of people in the city. It also acts as a catalyst for the RISE goals to provide a platform for underrepresented voices and address inequality.

RISE (recognising individual successes & efforts) is a not-for-profit organisation set up to raise the profile of Black entrepreneurs and role models and facilitate better inclusion into the city’s economy.

Returning in the wake of the Covid pandemic for its sixth installment, this year’s ceremony will include a special award to recognise the contribution of NHS workers.

“It is vital that we not only recognise the contributions within our community, business and entrepreneurs but remember those that lay the pathway for us,” says Sandra, speaking about the importance of the RISE Awards.

“These awards are a great endorsement of the key individuals and organisations in the city who are part of our historical legacy and who are laying the pathway for a more equal and inclusive future for all in Bristol.”

Entertainment on the night will feature Britain’s Got Talent finalist Magical Bones, Carroll Thompson, of the Queens of Lovers Rock, and comedian Curtis Walker.

Music will be provided by DJ Style from Code of the Street, BBC Radio Bristol & Ujima radio.

Deputy mayor Asher Craig will be presenting The Mayor’s Award to someone who has provided above and beyond for their community.
