Road closure plans for ‘liveable neighbourhood’ trial revealed
Bristol City Council has revealed what roads will be closed to traffic as part of a trial in east Bristol to help make the area quieter, safer and healthier.
As part of the £5.8m East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood scheme, a series of traffic measures will be installed across Barton Hill and parts of Redfield and St George.
The measures will see roads in the residential area south of Lawrence Hill, Church Road and Summerhill Road blocked off to vehicles, to tackle rat-running and through-traffic.

Vehicular access will be maintained for residents, delivery drivers and the emergency services.
Measures include pocket parks, modal filters – such as benches, planters or bollards – and bus gates, to address local concerns about road safety, air pollution and a lack of places to connect as a community.

People will still be able to pass through any of the measures by walking, cycling, wheeling or scooting – and bus access will be maintained throughout the area.
As part of the trial, the council will also install ten cycle hangers across the area in yet-to-be-decided locations.
Don Alexander, cabinet member for transport, commented: “This trial phase will help us understand how a potential future permanent scheme could look and, through ongoing engagement, understand what people living within the area like about it and what they would change before putting in place any final scheme.”
The trial will take place from autumn 2023, and could be made permanent from 2025. If successful, it could also be replicated in other areas such as BS3 in south Bristol.
