Roads transformed after work to fix potholes begins

By Mia Vines Booth  Wednesday Feb 28, 2024

Cyclists can now glide gracefully across a roundabout in Bedminster and an intersection on Cheltenham Road as work to resurface some of Bristol’s most notorious pothole-filled roads gets underway.

The intersection by Boston Tea Party on Cheltenham Road which was blighted by a number of dangerous potholes has now been resurfaced, but the cycle lane travelling towards Gloucester Road way has not yet been repainted onto the road.

And a roundabout that links East Street, North Street and West Street in Bedminster has also been given a smooth finish.

The roundabout has been the subject of multiple photo ops in recent years from various councillors’ complaining about its hazardous potholes, and also an artist spectacle after each hole was filled in with brightly coloured paint.

Repairs to the roundabout linking North Street and East Street have been years in the making

Not a pothole in sight on Cheltenham Road…

The transformations are part of an £850,000 package of repairs secured by Bristol City Council from the Department of Transport, with the roads chosen using an “evidence-based approach… to make sure busy roads, most in need of repairs, are at the top of the list”.

The programme of “intensive” road resurfacing works to repair 14 roads across Bristol that are particularly blighted by potholes, started on February 12.

As well as making the roads safer to cyclists and scooter riders, the repairs will also fix drainage problems that have blighted Bristol’s roads.

These are the 14 roads that will be resurfaced:

  • Bath Road, Brislington – at its junction with Sandy Park Road
  • Broom Hill, Stapleton – mini roundabout at its junction with Park Road
  • Cannon Street, Bedminster – mini roundabout
  • Cheltenham Road – from Arley Hill to Ashley Road
  • Christmas Street
  • Gordon Road, Whitehall – near Gordon Avenue
  • The Haymarket
  • Hazelbury Road, Brislington – at its junction with West Town Lane
  • Henleaze Road, Henleaze – the roundabout on the junction with Eastfield Road
  • Stockwood Road – near the Bath Road Park & Ride
  • Temple Way
  • Vassall Road, Fishponds – at its junction with Gill Avenue
  • Wick Road, Brislington – at its junction with Sandy Park Road
  • Winterstoke Road, Bedminster – near Luckwell Road

The work is estimated to last until the end of March.
