Rose Hulse: ‘Labour doesn’t own Bristol’

By Hope Talbot  Friday May 24, 2024

Rose Hulse is determined to prove the polls wrong.

The Conservative candidate in the newly created Bristol North East constituency is a successful businesswoman who is originally from California.

She has spent her career working in media, sales and production, across the likes of the Hollywood Reporter, NBC Universal and The Sundance Institute.

In 2012, Hulse launched her own brand, ScreenHits Limited. Focusing on providing media tech, ScreenHits TV allows subscribers to integrate all their streaming platforms into one app.

Opinion polls may be predicting a win for Labour candidate Damien Egan in Bristol North East but Hulse is not so sure.

“Labour doesn’t own Bristol,” Hulse told Bristol24/7. “Many people feel disappointed and don’t feel they need to vote a certain way to get what they want.”

As a Black woman existing in a business world so often hostile to people like her, Hulse knows what it’s like to be left behind.

“I know what inequality is,” she said. “As part of my campaign, I want to ensure that no person is overlooked and that all voices are heard.”

Hulse said that she is keen to focus on issues which have long exhausted residents in the north east of our city, most notably the inaccessibility of housing and homeownership.

A firm opponent of the One Lockleaze development, she is keen to focus on making new housing developments align more closely with the average local salaries, which currently sits around £27,500.

Hulse also hopes to ease the current pressures put on carers. At present, there are nearly 34,000 unpaid carers in Bristol.

“We need to look at care as employment. The NHS is under significant pressure and valuing carers for their work is a key way to taking pressure off.”

Using her business acumen, Hulse aims to bring fresh enterprise to the constituency which encompasses parts of Bristol including Eastville, Hillfields and Lockleaze and parts of neighbouring South Glos including Kingswood, Mangotsfield and Staple Hill.

Looking at the media and financial industries, Hulse is confident in her ability to secure investment in the area.

She said: “I believe countries should be run like businesses. As someone who has achieved success in the business world, I recognise my need to give back and use my understanding to help Bristol North East grow.”

Hulse’s first experience in politics came from her work with former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan. Through this work, she recognised the difficulties of local politics and feels she has learnt how to use her real-world experience to navigate these challenges.

An element of US politics she aims to draw from is its grassroots nature. Determined not to give in to assumptions about being a Tory politician, she is keen to showcase her talents beyond merely representing her party.

“After living in the UK for 12 years, I feel far more comfortable in the UK. Never once have I felt in danger while campaigning…

“It is what happens locally that matters, and I want to engage with all people across a range of backgrounds.”
