Scaffolding at Temple Meads to remain for three more years

By Alex Seabrook  Tuesday Sep 26, 2023

Scaffolding at Bristol Temple Meads is due to stay up for three more years as part of a lengthy restoration project.

Network Rail is refurbishing and restoring the giant roof built in the 1870s as well as a wider programme of changes across the train station.

Construction on the roof is due to finish in December 2025, while the scaffolding will be removed by December 2026, according to a new Bristol City Council report.

New anti-ramming barriers will also be installed in spring 2024 to prevent terrorist attacks, and derelict rooms along Station Approach will be reopened with new toilets.

In the longer term, a new “bespoke facility” for cycle parking is planned as part of the Temple Quarter regeneration project.

The refurbishment of Bonaparte’s bar on Platform 3 is expected to finish next summer with another restaurant or bar built on Station Approach where the British Transport Police station currently is, and the police station moving to the lower level of the Passenger Shed in early 2025 to make space for the new venue.

An update on the works to the train station, as well as the wider Temple Quarter regeneration project, will be given to councillors on the growth and regeneration scrutiny commission on Thursday.
