Sneak preview of CARGO
A new multi-media experience that offers an empowering, alternative narrative to the transatlantic slave trade story will be previewed as part of Bristol Festival of Ideas.
Created by poet Lawrence Hoo, CARGO – Charting African Resilience and Generating Opportunities – provides an accurate historical account of the fight for the freedom of the enslaved, and their subsequent human and civil rights.
Due to open in Bristol in mid-2020, the installation will be toured around the country and, through a multi-media platform, will highlight the strength and resilience of brave individuals who blazed a trail battling adversity, laying the foundations for the future.

Hoo is releasing a sneak preview of the installation to coincide with the launch of his book, CARGO, as part of a special Festival of the Future City event on Monday, October 14.
Through his work, the poet profiles the lives of many inspirational individuals from the African diaspora, including Nanny of The Maroons, Samuel Sharpe and Mary Seacole, through to present day leaders and changemakers.
“It’s looking at achievements and accomplishments of the African diaspora, and what they did for themselves rather than what was done for them,” said Hoo, talking to Bristol24/7 about the project in April.
He has collaborated with producer and creative lead Chaz Golding, of Hello Charlie on the project.
