South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood pilot scheme moves closer

By Martin Booth  Thursday Dec 7, 2023

Bristol’s cabinet member for transport hopes that a liveable neighbourhood for south Bristol will create “a network of safer and quieter streets to encourage people to walk, cycle, and wheel for shorter journeys; improve air quality; enhance the public realm and green spaces; and improve access to local high streets and culture”.

Details remain thin on the ground for the pilot scheme, with the city council currently analysing data ahead of making decisions on the area that will be somewhere within Bedminster, Southville and Windmill Hill, with the current administration saying they “would not support the inclusion” of Ashton Gate Stadium.

Writing in a blog post, Don Alexander said that collecting traffic, air quality and noise data, as well as analysing the ward profiles, “will help us form initial proposals for wider discussion through plenty of local engagement, before local councillors make final decisions on the scope of the scheme”.

Alexander said: “Early in 2024 we will begin our programme of engagement with key stakeholders, including local community leaders and organisations, to find out what issues and challenges their communities face.

“We will use this information, along with our local data, to co-develop early proposals to further collaborate and consult on. We will also ask people who live in or travel through south Bristol for their views and ideas.

“We will be keen to talk to residents across much of the BS3 area of south Bristol, including parts of Southville, Windmill Hill and Bedminster.

“This engagement will be crucial to confirming the area for potential interventions, which will only be finalised through collaboration with local stakeholders and community groups.”

News of the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood pilot comes as the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood Scheme encompassing parts of Barton Hill, Redfield and St George has been hit by another delay due to the evacuation of Barton House.

Plans for a liveable neighbourhood in south Bristol were paused in July after strong opposition to the new trial in the east of the city.
