Square Food Foundation marks ten year anniversary with major fundraising drive
An organisation that has been tackling food poverty for ten years is marking its milestone anniversary with an ambitious fundraising appeal.
Set up by chef, teacher and advocate for food education Barny Haughton MBE in 2011, Square Food Foundation delivers free and subsidised cookery courses and workshops for charities, schools and community groups.
The charity has partnered with Bristol24/7 to run the hugely successful Young Chefs programme, which provides training and employment opportunities in the hospitality sector for people not in education, employment or training.
is needed now More than ever
To celebrate its ten-year anniversary, Square Food is launching its ‘More Than A Meal’ appeal with an ambitious goal to raise £20,000 in ten days – enough to teach essential life skills to a further 1,000 adults and children in 2022.
Haughton says: “The last ten years have brought huge change – at both local and global levels. But the challenges we’ve faced have only made us more determined to see food education taken seriously by the people that make decisions that affect our health and our environment.”
Food poverty is a serious issue for thousands of families in Bristol and beyond. Visits to food banks skyrocketed during lockdown and the number of households forced to rely on this essential emergency resource remains high.
Operating out of The Park community centre in Knowle West, Square Food works to tackle food poverty at the root by teaching adults and children to cook healthy food, supporting them to become more confident in the kitchen and equipping them with the knowledge they need to access and prepare good food.
