Strength in diversity

By Lydia Melville  Thursday May 31, 2018

Taking pride in the fact that Bristol became a City of Sanctuary in 2011, the city will be dedicating a whole month to celebrate the vast diversity of its city with a programme of events for Bristol Refugee Festival.

Embracing Bristol’s hugely diverse cultures – more than 90 languages are spoken here – the festival strives to ensure the integration of refugees into our communities, showing how people with vastly different pasts can be involved in creating a shared future together.

The sharing of cultures not only allows everyone involved to learn about the vivid diversity that is present here in Bristol but also, by embracing our global neighbours, to revel in a rich and harmonious home here.

The festival culminates in a day of fun in festival square

The foundations of the Bristol Refugee Festival are rooted in the success of Refugee Week, which runs from June 18-24, and will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.

Events during the week include Celebrating Sanctuary, a festival-style afternoon of music, food and fun in Queen Square that is open to all members of the community, talks, workshops, film screenings, presentations and marches that take place in a variety of venues around the city centre and across Bristol.

Events are support by local charities including Borderlands, Refugee Women of Bristol and Bristol Hospitality Network. There’s also the option to create your own events to add to the programme, or to volunteer with the existing events to ensure they succeed.
