The Cube
A self-styled ‘microplex’, the Cube began a little over ten years ago* in the arse end of a Chinese restaurant. You had to walk through the restaurant’s lobby to get to it. It was then and remains a fiercely independent, free-thinking little place, devoid of corporate bollocks. They even make their own cola. The Cube has a small, cosy, velvet-seated auditorium with a stage for bands and a screen behind for films. It’s co-operatively run by volunteers and screens everything from cerebral arthouse flicks to political documentaries, bizarre double-bills, themed comedy and films nights and all sorts of other bonkers, brilliant one-off happenings. And lots of live music. The cooperative recently fund-raised enough cash to buy the building and are currently trying raise more to give it a long-overdue upgrade; get involved and/or sling them some dough if you can.
