Thekla donates £5,000 to Underfall Yard in wake of fire

By Maddy Hansen  Wednesday May 10, 2023

Thekla has made a donation of £5,000 to Underfall Yard to support the restoration of the site following the devastating fire.

A blaze broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning, destroying boats and sheds at the historic yard managed by Underfall Yard Trust.

In a statement on social media, night club and music venue Thekla said they were “devastated” to hear about the incident.

The post said: “The Trust do amazing community and volunteering work and the buildings there are an iconic part of the harbour.

“As a fellow longstanding landmark of the Bristol harbour, we are donating £5,000 to the Underfall Yard Trust to aid their restoration.

“If you are privileged to be in a position to help support them and their projects, please join us by donating – every penny will help.”

Since the fire, Robert Boyd-Stevenson, 45, has been arrested and charged with two counts of arson and was due to appear in court on Monday.

After the incident, Underfall Yard Trust said in a statement: “The fire has destroyed the heart of the yard where most of the boatbuilding activity takes place.

“Tenants’ businesses and boats have been ruined. We are supporting businesses best we can.

“We are absolutely committed to rebuilding the Yard and continuing the charities work.”

Underfall Yard Trust restored the slipway and buildings at the boat yard from dereliction in the 1990s, with it then set up as a working yard with tenants.

The Trust has received an outpouring of donations and messages of support in recent days on their Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/theunderfallyardtrust
