Thousands march through city centre to protest Trump’s UK visit

By Martin Booth  Friday Jul 13, 2018

‘Trump, you are a bully’ read the handmade banner held aloft by five-year-old Ezra Holmes from Easton, who goes to Glenfrome Primary School in Easton.

Ezra was just one of thousands of people who first gathered for speeches by the Cascade Steps and then marched through the centre of Bristol to protest against US president Donald Trump’s visit to the UK.

While the red carpet was being rolled out for Trump at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, protesters first listened to speeches from representatives of groups including CND and Bristol People’s Assembly.

Rob Wotherspoon from the Bristol branch of the Communication Workers Union said: “I knew that Bristol would not let the country down for the red carpet being rolled out for the racist misogynist bully Donald Trump.”

Among the crowd, where many like Ezra had brought handmade banners, was Bristol deputy mayor Asher Craig.

Led by a group of young children and a remote controlled Trump-style yellow wig, demonstrators headed through the centre, along Nelson Street towards Broadmead and back along Broad Wear towards Bristol Bridge and Baldwin Street.
