Tony Dyer set to be council leader under Green administration

By Martin Booth  Thursday Apr 18, 2024

Born and raised in Hartcliffe, Tony Dyer trained as a bricklayer before moving into IT.

When the mayoral model comes to an end after the local elections on May 2, Dyer could become the most powerful elected politician in Bristol if the Green Party secure enough councillors to form the new administration at City Hall.

Southville councillor Dyer has been announced as the Green Party’s nominee for leader under the new committee system, with Heather Mack set to be his deputy if the Greens make history and take political control of a core city for the first time.

If re-elected in Bishopston & Ashley Down ward, Emma Edwards will remain as Green group leader in Bristol, where from May the council will be run by eight different committees made up of councillors from different parties.

Dyer, who previously stood for mayor, said that as council leader, he “would work collaboratively with the new committees, members of all parties, council officers and, most importantly, the communities of Bristol, to develop practical solutions with social and environmental values at their centre”.

Dyer said: “I am proud of my working class, south Bristol heritage which has shaped my politics and my desire to see our city deliver for all its residents.

“Green policies recognise that social justice cannot be separated from the challenges facing our climate and environment.”

Mack has represented Lockleaze since 2021 where she won that election’s biggest swing from Labour to the Greens.

She said: “Having grown up on a council estate and also been a foster carer for Bristol City Council, I have a deep emotional connection and understanding of the importance of local government in protecting our vulnerable.

“As deputy leader of the council, this will be in the front of my mind at all times.”

Edwards added: “While my focus will continue to be on leading and coordinating the ever-expanding Green group of councillors, I am looking forward to working closely with Tony and Heather to push forward the progressive policies laid out in our manifesto for Bristol.”
