Tories promise to end ‘unjust war on motorists’ in Bristol
The Conservatives have launched their local election campaign in Bristol with a promise to improve core services, support high streets, deliver more housing across the city and end Labour’s “unjust war on motorists”.
There are currently 14 Tory councillors at City Hall, with Mark Shelford also re-standing as police & crime commissioner on May 2.
The party’s Bristol North West MP candidate Laura Saunders and Bristol South MP candidate Liz Brennan joined the campaign launch next to the SS Great Britain.

Mark Weston, councillor for Henbury & Brentry and leader of the Conservative group in Bristol, said: “The return of rule by committees presents a great opportunity for politicians to concentrate on the kinds of things that local taxpayers demand and rightly expect from their local authority.
“Clean streets and well-maintained public highways, reliable recycling and refuse collection, tidy parks with equipment in good repair, encouraging developers to deliver more housing, keeping libraries open and well-stocked, supporting our high streets and a fairer deal for motorists.
“The Labour Party have failed Bristol. Their deeply unpopular mayor and administration have overseen a broad decline of our brilliant city.
“Their unjust war on motorists has increased pressure on small businesses and those on lower incomes, while their complete failure to maintain basic services like buses, roads, or SEND services have left local people in a state of despair.
“If elected, a large cohort of Conservative councillors will be committed to improving citywide services so that often neglected parts of the city, like our suburbs, are not left behind to go to rot and ruin.”
