Turbo Island for sale
One of Bristol’s most infamous plots of land is for sale via auction.
Turbo Island has a guide price of £50,000 and is being marketed as a potential development site for a mixed use scheme of a shop or restaurant at ground level and accommodation on the floors above.
The area of land on the corner of Stokes Croft and Jamaica Street is believed to have gained its nickname from a brand of cheap cider popular in the 1980s.
is needed now More than ever
In 2022, Turbo Island was concreted over in an attempt to prevent anti-social behaviour but this did not stop regular fires still being lit in what for some has become a no-go area.
But for others, Turbo Island has become a semi-mythical part of Bristol.
It remains a lawless enclave that has so far resisted the gentrification of much of its surroundings.
An unofficial website dedicated to Turbo Island calls it “a vibrant and thriving open-air social hub”.
“Located at the junction of the iconic Jamaica Street and the bustling Stokes Croft, Turbo Island is a locale that thrives on the city’s lively energy, providing a unique setting for 24/7 socialising.
“Enjoy the outdoor seating arrangements that seemingly materialize out of nowhere – sofas, office chairs, even the occasional mattress – perfect for under-the-stars lounging.
“Turbo Island attracts a delightful blend of local Bristolians, who are always more than happy to engage in lively conversation, as well as visitors from farther afield.
“Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, a quiet visitor or an enthusiastic socialite, Turbo Island offers an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all.”
