Two more men jailed following city centre violence

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Aug 20, 2024

A total of eight people have now been sent to prison for their parts in the racist violence in Bristol on August 3.

Craig Timbrell, 38, of Hartcliffe, and Bradley McCarthy, 34, of Knowle, have become the latest to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court having both earlier pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

Timbrell was sentenced to 30 months and McCarthy to 20 months.

The court was shown footage of Timbrell being part of a large group of people on Redcliffe Way roundabout where he threw concrete bricks and a glass bottle towards police officers.

Judge Martin Lambert described his behaviour as “aggressive” and “disgusting”.

McCarthy threatened and was racially abusive to counter-protesters in Castle Park, as well as shouting at officers and in the face of police dogs.

Judge Lambert said he had been part of a “violent mob” in Castle Park which was “violent, threatening and used racially aggravated language targeting asylum seeker and refugees”.

Avon & Somerset Police detective chief inspector Clement Goodwin said: “These two men played a key role in encouraging shocking abuse towards police officers and members of the public and the wider violent disorder we saw on August 3.

“They were part of a group which used or threatened violence and caused others to fear for their safety and are now starting prison sentences as a result.

“We have consistently said we would pursue those responsible for the disgraceful behaviour we saw that day and this work continues.”
