Underfall Yard restoration to keep ‘true spirit’ of site alive

By Karen Johnson  Friday Jun 21, 2024

Underfall Yard trustees have pledged to keep the “true spirit” of the site alive “but at the same time bring it into the 21st century to create an historic yard for a modern, thriving industry”.

Newly released artist impressions show what the largest building at the site will look like following its restoration.

The ‘Big Shed’ was the wooden building that displayed the distinctive Underfall Yard lettering before it was destroyed in a devastating fire in May 2023.

The planning application submitted to Bristol City Council, includes the restoration of an area spanning 840m² of the 8,460m² site.

Despite additions like doors to the Big Shed and roof repairs to the site’s damaged portions, plans submitted assure that the historic fabric of the site will be retained.

Designers from Alec French Architects will ensure this by ensuring that materials used in the restoration are in keeping with the site’s original design.

Underfall Yard Trust director, Sarah Murray, called the restoration of the Big Shed an “important next step” in their journey to recovery.

Murray said: “It is important for us to respect the site’s heritage and keep the true spirit of Underfall Yard alive.

“But at the same time bring it into the 21st century to create an historic yard for a modern, thriving industry.

“We look forward to being here for many years to come.”

Several historical assets including cast iron columns, bargeboard bricks for the roof facia, downpipes and guttering are due to be retained as part of the restoration.

Discussions to obtain a scheduled monument consent for the repairs from Historic England have begun.
