Vigil for Manchester Arena attack to be held on College Green

By Ella Kemp  Wednesday May 24, 2017

Following the terror attack on Manchester Arena on Monday, May 22 2017, University of Bristol students Lily Dyble and Grace Mainon are organising a vigil on College Green to show solidarity in Bristol, at 6pm on Wednesday May 24.

The attack targeted an Ariana Grande concert, killing 22 people and injuring 64, with 20 still in hospital at the time of writing. Since the attack, four people have been arrested in connection and the terror threat level has been raised to ‘critical’ for the first time in 10 years.

The event on College Green will commemorate the lives lost and build towards national solidarity with the city of Manchester in a time where unity trumps terror.

Of the event, co-organiser Lily Dyble said: “Those of us from Manchester will always feel an affinity with our city that is not weakened nor sullied by distance. Though thankfully our family and friends were all safe, not all were that lucky and this was still very much an attack on our home.”

Attendees will be encouraged to write messages of hope, solidarity, and condolence on large boards. Organisers hope this will show a tangible display of support in Bristol and across the nation.

“The purpose of the boards is to respond with colour, and positivity. As theatre students, an artistic contribution of solidarity felt appropriate,” Lily says. “We are seeing kindness and humanity from our city, as the Mancunian spirit of togetherness emerges. We feel moved to do the same here in Bristol, and to offer others the opportunity to stand together.”
