Village Green status could protect Turbo Island from development
A decade ago, Turbo Island was covered in grass and a collection of miniature Easter Island heads.
Now, a reminder of that time and other occasions when the space was used by the community is needed in order to prove that this infamous plot of land on Stokes Croft deserves to be granted Village Green status.
It is just the latest attempt to prevent the development of the space which is for sale at auction in October.
is needed now More than ever
Organisers behind the bid to gain Village Green status hope to deter potential developers of the site from buying the land at the auction.
According to Bristol City Council’s website, “land can be registered as a green if it’s been used by local people for recreational pastimes for at least 20 years”.
So that is what campaigners hoping to save Turbo Island are doing: appealing for evidence of Turbo Island being used in a social manner over the last two decades.
It is the same tactic used by campaigners wanting to remove the fence erected by Cotham School from around Stoke Lodge playing fields, with the city council granting it Town Green status in 2013 but the school taking the decision to the High Court.

Organisers of the Turbo Island campaign say that if Village Green status is applied for, “this will absolutely deter the big corporations”.
