‘Waking fire watch’ to be introduced at four blocks of flats
A ‘waking fire watch’ is being introduced in four blocks of flats in Bristol.
This is a system where specially trained people will continually patrol all the floors and the outside of the buildings in St Jude’s.
The fire evacuation procedure in the blocks has also changed with the new advice to residents being that they should now evacuate immediately in the case of a fire.
is needed now More than ever
It comes after inspections have been carried out ahead of a planned £18m.upgrading of John Cozens House, Haviland House, Charleton House, Langton House and Tyndall House – which among them have a total of 180 flats.
A Bristol City Council spokesperson said that the waking fire watch will continue until the council receive a full detailed report of the survey work being carried out by their external consultants.
The council say that Avon Fire & Rescue Service “have been supportive” of their approach to update the evacuation strategy in Charleton House, Haviland House, John Cozens House and Langton House.
The council spokesperson said: “We’re taking these steps as a precautionary measure following receipt of initial findings from the survey work carried out in these blocks.
“Whilst we must wait for a final report, we have discussed initial findings which indicate that, while fire safety measures are present and offering protection, further work will potentially be advised to make sure that the blocks meet new higher fire safety standards.”
